EU negotiations on CBAM expansion: key disagreements over emissions and suspension mechanisms

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

The upcoming negotiations on expanding the European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) may hinge on resolving several disagreements between the EU Council and the European Parliament.

The main points of divergence concern the use of country-level emissions values to prevent fraud, as well as the introduction of an emergency suspension mechanism.

According to Carbon Pulse, these issues have become key ahead of discussions on expanding CBAM, which already applies to imports of certain goods with a high carbon footprint.

Member states and Members of the European Parliament have not yet reached a common position on the details, which could drag out the approval process.

What compromise will the parties ultimately manage to find?
