Major Hotel Chains Scale Back Cuban Operations Amid Sanctions Risks-1

Major hotel groups Meliá, Iberostar, and Blue Diamond are scaling back their presence in Cuba as U.S. sanctions pressure continues to intensify. Reports from BBC Mundo and Euronews indicate that Meliá has terminated its management of 15 hotels on the island, Iberostar has ended its involvement with 12 properties, and Blue Diamond previously announced its withdrawal from managing Cuban hotels.

Rather than a wholesale exit, these corporate decisions reflect a strategic overhaul of operational models aimed at mitigating legal and financial risks triggered by new American restrictions. In May 2026, Washington rolled out fresh sanctions against the Cuban conglomerate GAESA, which the United States identifies as a central pillar of the island’s economy and its tourism-related infrastructure.

Since tourism remains a cornerstone of the Cuban economy, the dwindling presence of international operators could introduce significant new hurdles for the nation's hospitality sector. However, it is more appropriate to view the situation not as an industry-wide collapse, but as a phased reorganization of partnerships and management structures driven by external pressures and domestic economic difficulties.
