US President Donald Trump said that if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in the November 2026 midterm elections, every adult citizen of the country will receive a payment of $5000.
The statement was made on 9 September at the first-ever Republican Party convention dedicated to the midterm elections, in Dallas. Trump called it the "best part" of his speech.
"If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate, I will pay a dividend of $5000 to every adult US citizen," he said. He proposed calling the payment the "Trump dividend."
According to him, the money should be spent domestically. Trump linked the possibility of the payments to "enormous economic strength and success" and mentioned tariffs as one of the sources of funding.
Similar payments were previously received by military personnel — the so-called "Warrior Dividend" of $1776. The new initiative, by estimates, could cost more than $1 trillion.
Trump urged supporters to vote as if he himself were in the race: "Please pretend that I am on the ballot, and go out and vote on 3 November."
Could such a promise influence the outcome of the vote amid falling presidential approval ratings and economic challenges?
The details of the payment mechanism and its legislative formalization have not yet been clarified. Trump had previously spoken about possible dividends from tariffs, but there had been no concrete payments on such a scale.
