Along one of Europe’s most stunning routes, amidst the evergreens and steep hairpin turns of the Transfăgărășan, an incident occurred that has already taken the internet by storm. A man stood on the shoulder, completely engrossed in his smartphone. Meanwhile, just inches behind him, a massive brown bear was making a slow and silent approach.
Footage captured from a passing car looks almost surreal. A bear cub—though its size suggests it is still a juvenile—emerges from the woods, circles a parked Ford Focus, and approaches the man directly.
The animal sniffs his legs, gives him a gentle nudge, and even tries to take a tentative "test bite." The man doesn't move. He remains glued to his screen.
Only when the predator enters his direct field of vision does the tourist finally realize what is happening. Panicked, he bolts from the spot and runs toward his car. The bear takes a few steps in pursuit but quickly loses interest.
The video lasts just over forty seconds, but that was enough to ignite a wave of online discussion. Some users are laughing: "Even the bear looks confused."
Others are outraged: "How can anyone be so oblivious?" Still others simply shake their heads in disbelief.
The Transfăgărășan has long been a place where wilderness and tourism collide far too closely. Every season, dozens of bear encounters are recorded here.
Many of these bears have grown accustomed to humans, the smell of food from vehicles, and the constant flash of cameras. As a result, the calmer a person acts, the bolder the animal becomes.
In this instance, the bear likely didn't even recognize the man as a potential threat. He was standing too quietly and too still.
Experts have spent years hammering home the same advice: do not stop in high-activity bear zones, do not leave your vehicle unless absolutely necessary, never feed the wildlife, and above all, stay alert. You can check your phone later. You cannot do the same with a bear.
This story could have ended very differently. Fortunately, this time the encounter resulted in nothing more than a scare and a viral video.
The man drove away, and the bear returned to the forest. Yet thousands around the world will continue to watch these frames and ask the same thing: how lost in a phone must one be to stop noticing a bear standing at their very feet?
The scenery along the Transfăgărășan remains breathtaking. But it also remains unforgiving of negligence.
