Chinese researchers from Hong Kong and mainland China have unveiled a lightweight neuroprosthesis that requires no battery and helps people who have suffered a stroke to walk more naturally.
The device harvests energy from the user's own movements and converts it into electrical stimulation of the muscles. This makes it possible to flex the ankle and restore the habitual walking pattern.
The prosthesis works automatically: it needs no external sensors or battery-powered control. A mechanically linked system for harvesting energy and delivering stimulation is activated during walking.
According to the team, the device can prevent falls in stroke survivors, older adults and others with mobility impairments. The researchers also noted its potential for use by athletes during training.
The results were published in the journal Nature Communications 2 September 2026. Trials showed immediate improvement in stride length and walking speed both on an indoor treadmill and outdoors.
