In Europe, farmers are demonstrating that soil can be made more resilient to extreme heat-1

While the summer heat turns many of Europe's fields into dry, yellow-brown expanses, some farmers are showing that even in conditions of prolonged drought, land can be made significantly more resilient.

On one British farm, pastures remained lush and green after nearly two months with almost no rain—at a time when neighboring farms were already having to use feed stored for the winter.

The secret turned out to be not extra irrigation, but what exactly is growing in the field.

Not just grass, but an entire ecosystem 🌱

Instead of a typical uniform pasture, farmers are using so-called herbal leys, which include different types of grasses, legumes, and plants with deep roots.

Each plant here has its own task.

Some quickly create a dense green cover. Others send their roots deep into the ground and draw moisture from soil layers that ordinary grass cannot reach.

Legumes help naturally enrich the soil with nitrogen, and the variety of roots makes it looser and improves its ability to retain water.

Instead of a field dependent on a single type of grass, the result is a small, resilient ecosystem.

The ground becomes cooler

The difference is especially noticeable during heatwaves.

On one farm, the soil temperature under the plant cover was about 32 °C.

Just a few meters away, on a patch of bare soil, the temperature rose to approximately 51 °C.

A difference of nearly twenty degrees.

This makes a huge difference.

When the ground surface overheats, water evaporates from it faster, microorganisms suffer, earthworm activity decreases, and soil structure deteriorates.

A dense plant cover acts almost like a natural sunscreen: it creates shade, retains moisture, and helps soil life survive the hottest days.

Deep roots work like natural pumps

One of the main features of such pastures is plants with long roots.

In normal weather, this difference may be almost unnoticeable.

But during a drought, the top layers of the soil dry out quickly, and plants with short root systems begin to suffer.

Deep-rooted species continue to receive moisture from well below the surface.

Thanks to this, the field remains green longer, and the animals continue to receive fresh feed.

For a farm, this can mean the difference between a calm summer and the need to use up winter reserves in the middle of the season.

Old ideas for a new climate

The most interesting thing about this story is that the technology does not require complex machinery or revolutionary chemical developments.

In many ways, it is about returning to more diverse farming.

Modern agriculture has long strived for maximum uniformity: one plant variety, one field, one care system.

But extreme weather shows the advantage of diversity.

If one species handles heat poorly, another withstands it better. If one uses moisture near the surface, another draws it from the depths.

This makes the field less vulnerable to any one specific weather scenario.

Small adaptation with a big effect

Farmers cannot control the amount of rain or the air temperature.

But they can influence how well the land withstands periods of heat.

And that is precisely what makes this story so encouraging.

Adapting to a changing climate is often portrayed as something monumental: dams, new technologies, and multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects.

But sometimes the solution begins much more simply—with the seeds a farmer chooses for their field.

While neighboring pastures burn out, a diverse green field continues to thrive. And this is a vivid reminder: properly managed soil is capable of withstanding significantly more than it seems.
