A 97-year-old man attended his great-granddaughter's graduation from the same medical school he graduated from 60 years ago-1

This touching story took place in the summer of 2026 at the University of Kentucky involving these individuals:

Dr. Westel Creager — 97 years old, lives in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

Haiden Hauret — his great-granddaughter, who enrolled in the medical school of the same university.

Westel Creager began his adult life as a carpenter. At over 30 years old, he decided to radically change his path, enrolling in college and then in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He was the oldest student in his class and graduated in 1970 at the age of 41. After that, he worked as a physician for many years.

A promise and its fulfillment

When Haiden was about to apply to university, her great-grandfather told her: "If you get into medical school, I will definitely come to your ceremony."

Haiden kept her word: she didn't just get into medical school, she chose her great-grandfather's alma mater. And Westel, despite being 97 years old, also kept his promise. The family specially prepared a clean white doctor's coat for him, and he wore it to the White Coat Ceremony—a symbolic initiation for medical students.

In a video that later appeared on social media, the elderly doctor can be seen standing next to his great-granddaughter in his white coat, quietly saying: "I am overwhelmed with emotion..."

Relatives noted that this was a special moment for Westel: his mind is still sharp, but due to his age, he is often treated like a child. At the ceremony, however, he was treated with respect, and for the first time in a long while, he felt truly important and needed.

Westel has already stated that he plans to live to see the next important milestone—the hooding ceremony, when Haiden receives her Doctor of Medicine degree.

The story resonated widely precisely because it brought together three generations, the continuity of a profession, and a rare opportunity to see the past literally meet the future in a single white coat.
