US President Donald Trump has announced a new official name for artificial intelligence technologies. Speaking on 22 September 2026, he stated that the word "artificial" creates the impression that this intelligence is "not real" and "fake."
"It sounds like it's fake. And it's not fake. It's actually amazing," Trump said. According to him, from now on all documents of the United States will use the term "super intelligence" — "superintelligence," or SI.
The president expressed hope that the whole world would pick up the new term as well. He emphasized that the US intends to "encourage" the development of superintelligence rather than restrain it, and rejected any attempts to create global mechanisms of control over this technology.
Trump's decision was a continuation of his approach to renaming: earlier, his administration had already changed the names of geographical objects. Some administration officials have already begun using the new wording. In particular, White House Chief Technology Officer Ethan Klein wrote: "The superintelligence president has spoken."
Experts note that the term "superintelligence" already existed in scholarly literature and usually denoted a hypothetical intelligence significantly surpassing human intelligence. Now, however, it may acquire a completely different, broader official meaning in American documents.
For now, the question remains open as to how actively the new terminology will be used outside of government papers and whether the technology industry will embrace it.
