Harsh Savergaonkar left India to work in the US and fairly quickly realized that ordinary video calls with his mom weren't enough for him.
So he solved the problem in the most IT way possible — he left a video call running around the clock.
Now an old Linux laptop with a big screen sits on his mom's dining table. The connection works almost constantly: mom goes about her own business at home, her son goes about his own thousands of kilometers away, but at any moment they can simply look at each other.
Which is to say, this isn't quite a video call anymore.
It's practically a digital window between India and the US.
So formally, Harsh moved to the US.
In reality — he stayed in his mom's kitchen.
So that Wi-Fi, a browser, or a laptop that suddenly fell asleep wouldn't destroy the family idyll, Harsh brought in Claude. The AI helped write scripts that automatically restore the connection after failures. If the laptop reboots, the browser closes, or the internet briefly disappears — the system tries to reconnect the video link.
If the internet drops — the call comes back.
If the browser freezes — it restarts.
If the screen goes dark — mom just has to press one button.
And her son is there again.
Sort of like a houseplant, only it answers every now and then.
The funniest part is that they don't talk around the clock at all. Each of them goes about their own business. Sometimes they just stay silent.
But the connection stays on constantly.
So now the classic phrase:
"Call your mom"
is no longer relevant for Harsh.
He has already called.
And he hasn't hung up yet. 😄
The story quickly went viral, because it has everything at once: a mom, an old laptop, artificial intelligence, and a technical solution to one of the oldest human problems — how to move far away and still stay close.
In short, AI was promised to be used to change the world.
And it started with something truly important:
it made it so that mom can always check whether you've eaten.
leaving mom for work was the hardest this time so i set up an old linux laptop with a big screen on our dining table that stays on a video call 24x7 got claude to write scripts so that if the laptop / browser crashes it rejoins, if the wifi breaks it fixes itself and rejoins,
"Let's start by making it so that mom can always see her son." ❤️
