Cognitive neuroscientist Sarah Baldeo created a personalized AI clone of herself to stay connected with her 15-year-old son during frequent work trips.

How the "digital parent" was created

To make the AI imitate her personality as accurately as possible, Sarah Baldeo approached the process with professional thoroughness. She trained the chatbot by uploading screenshots of her real text conversations with her son into the system, as well as documents describing in detail her life values, parenting principles, and family rules. The goal was to give the teenager the opportunity to turn to the "digital mom" for advice or support in her absence.

An unexpected use of the technology

The son asked the AI clone how he could persuade his real mother to let him meet his friends at one of Chicago's coffee shops. The AI assembled arguments based on her own views. The son used the advice, and the mom agreed with them.

The mother's reaction: "I was manipulated with my own arguments"

Upon learning about this, Sarah Baldeo had mixed feelings. "My instinctive reaction in hindsight was: 'My God, I was manipulated with my own reasoning,'" she shared in an interview with Business Insider.

However, after reflecting on the situation, the neuroscientist appreciated her son's resourcefulness: "I thought about it and thought that this is actually a very clever way to use the technology, because that is not how I planned for it to be used."

What this means for the future

This case goes beyond an amusing family story. It raises important questions about how we integrate AI into interpersonal relationships. On the one hand, the technology can help compensate for the physical absence of a loved one, preserving continuity of communication. On the other hand, it creates new, unforeseen scenarios of interaction, in which algorithms can be used to circumvent parental control or for a kind of "manipulation," even if they are programmed to strictly follow the rules.

Sarah Baldeo's experiment clearly shows: when we endow machines with our own words, logic, and values, we must be prepared for these tools to be used in ways we cannot always predict.
