From August 22 to 26, 2026 the second World Humanoid Robot Games were held in Beijing — competitions for humanoid robots. More than two thousand machines from 16 countries took part. They ran 100 meters (some even faster than Usain Bolt), jumped, lifted weights, played football, and boxed.
But the real stars were not the winners, but the losers.
Robots fell en masse, crashed into soft barriers at full speed, lost legs and arms, sparked, and even caught fire. One sprinter crashed into a mat after the finish, bounced off, and burst into flames. Another lost a leg mid-run. A weightlifter robot lost its balance and nearly crushed the judges' table.
The most viral moment was a robot walking up the stairs to the podium when it suddenly turned its head to get a better look at robot cheerleaders in short skirts and bright wigs. Distracted, it tripped and tumbled headfirst over the railing. The video garnered millions of views. A comment in the spirit of 'Don't get distracted by a pretty face at work — even if you're not made of carbon' became a meme.
It looked like a sports FailArmy, but instead of people, there was metal, sparks, and smoke. The organizers continued the competitions, while the audience and the internet simply died laughing.
Technology has certainly come a long way. But for now, robots are still excellent at one thing — falling comically and spectacularly.
