Paula Moltzan: 32 years old and a first World Cup triumph — a fairy tale that outpaces time

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

In Sölden, at the traditional season opener, 32-year-old American Paula Moltzan claimed the first World Cup victory of her career in alpine skiing — and did so by a margin of one hundredth of a second. She beat Lara Colturi of Albania and became the oldest athlete to achieve such success for the first time.

Moltzan started fifth after the first run, but posted the best time in the second and climbed to the top. Six-time World Cup overall champion Mikaela Shiffrin, who led after the first run, dropped to seventh in deteriorating visibility. For the 31-year-old American, it was a reminder: even record holders are not immune to the shifting reality of alpine skiing.

Over 13 World Cup seasons, Moltzan had ten podium finishes but not a single victory. She was cut from the U.S. team ten years ago, came back, won Olympic bronze in the team combined in 2026 and in May changed equipment — switching to Van Deer skis and becoming the first woman on that Austrian team. Summer work on the new gear paid off right here, on the Rettenbach.

This result is not merely a personal triumph. It shows how, in a sport dominated by young talents, perseverance and a willingness to take risks can overturn the established hierarchy. Moltzan did not chase the number of starts; she sought the moment when everything would come together: technique, psychology and equipment. Her victory is like a late bloom in a world where early success is often considered the only measure.

This season Shiffrin called it a "season of exploration" and cut back on slaloms, focusing on giant slalom and super-G. Her deficit in Sölden is not a failure but part of a strategy. Yet it is precisely against the backdrop of such a plan that Moltzan's victory looks especially striking: sometimes a team's second-stringers become the main heroes when the favorites leave room.

For American alpine skiing, this is a signal: squad depth is growing, and age barriers are blurring. Moltzan proved that 32 years old is not a limit but a new starting point, where experience and courage can outplay even the most impressive statistics.
