Pogačar against time and rivals: how the 2026 season revealed the limits of dominance and new horizons for cycling

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

In the 2026 season, Tadej Pogačar once again found himself in the spotlight, but not only because of victories. His dominance in the classics and the Tour de France met with unexpected challenges: from injuries to the emergence of young talents who prompted reflection on the future of cycling.

Pogačar won his fifth Tour de France, three Monument races — Milan — San Remo, the Tour of Flanders and Liège — Bastogne — Liège — and several stages. However, his season was cut short by a crash at the Vuelta, where he suffered a broken collarbone and a concussion. According to sources, this served as a reminder of the fragility of even the most outstanding athletes.

Jonas Vingegaard, by contrast, completed the grand tour "triple crown" by winning the Giro d'Italia. At the Tour de France he was running second, trailing by 4:30, but withdrew after a crash on stage 15. His domestique noted that Pogačar looked "less brilliant" than usual, and the Visma team continued to fight for victory rather than for second place.

Among other highlights were Paul Seixas's victory at Il Lombardia, a sensation for a 20-year-old rider, and Wout van Aert's triumph at Paris — Roubaix. Enric Mas at the Vuelta managed to catch and pass Pogačar on a climb, a rare example of tactical success against the Slovenian.

These events reveal not only individual achievements but also systemic factors: sponsor pressure, the risks of injury and the evolution of tactics in an era of one athlete's dominance. As in chess, where one strong player forces everyone to adapt, so here too rivals are seeking new paths.

The 2026 season showed that even under Pogačar's apparent monopoly, cycling remains a field for surprises and new stories that will shape its development in the coming years.
