Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix and closed in on the title

Kimi Antonelli confidently controlled the United States Grand Prix in Austin, starting from pole and finishing first after a single pit stop. The twenty-year-old Italian from Mercedes beat Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari and Max Verstappen in the Red Bull by more than 13 seconds, demonstrating a maturity rarely seen at such a young age.

The team's strategy of starting on medium tyres and switching to hard on lap 24 proved key. Antonelli did not fall for the temptation of the two pit stops that many rivals chose, and retained his advantage even after the virtual safety car. This decision allowed Mercedes not only to win the race but also to extend his lead in the overall standings to 123 points over his teammate George Russell.

The victory was Antonelli's ninth of the 2026 season. The title, however, still remains within reach: to clinch it early in Mexico, he need only finish no lower than ninth, even if Russell wins. Lewis Hamilton's fourth place and Russell's eighth left the mathematical chances open for one more race.

Behind the wheel, Antonelli acted like an experienced strategist rather than a young debutant. He quickly pulled away from Verstappen already on the first lap, when the Dutchman lost traction at the start, and then methodically made up positions after the pit stop. Such an approach is reminiscent of a chess player who sacrifices a temporary advantage for long-term control of the board.

Mercedes has clearly found the balance between speed and reliability in the new technical package. Antonelli repeatedly emphasised the teamwork: "This was exactly the result we needed. The strategy worked perfectly." His words reflect not only the joy of victory but also the understanding that the title is not only a personal achievement but also the outcome of collective effort.

The next race in Mexico City will be a formality for the young champion if he maintains his concentration. The victory in Austin showed that Formula 1 increasingly favours not only speed but also the ability to read the race several moves ahead.
