Kimi Antonelli on the brink of history: a title in Mexico is a symbol of a new era for Formula 1

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

In Austin, Andrea Kimi Antonelli did not merely win another Grand Prix — he put an end to a long story of waiting for Italian motorsport. His ninth victory of the season, a dominant drive from pole and a lead of 123 points over his nearest rival made the 20-year-old Mercedes driver the favourite, who in Mexico City need only finish in the top nine to become the youngest champion in the history of Formula 1.

The situation in the championship looks almost absurd: Antonelli leads his teammate George Russell by 123 points and Lewis Hamilton by 124. At the same time, a maximum of 125 points remains on offer in Mexico. Even if the Britons win the race, a modest result will be enough for the Italian to finish the job. This is no accident but the outcome of consistent work: nine wins from 18 rounds, flawless strategy and a composure rarely seen in a second-season debutant.

Behind the numbers lies a generational shift. Antonelli came to Mercedes in place of Hamilton and immediately showed that the new era is not about experience but about speed and adaptability. His style resembles the play of a young chess player who is not afraid to sacrifice position for a long-term advantage: a single stop in Austin, pace control and confidence that the team will not let him down.

For Italy this is a moment of national significance. The country's last champion was Alberto Ascari in 1953. Since then Formula 1 has become synonymous with Italian engineering, yet the title has slipped away. Antonelli can close a 73-year gap and do so in Mexico City, where the festive atmosphere will only amplify the effect.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has already called the title "99,9 % settled", leaving room for intrigue: either tequila in Mexico or a caipirinha in Brazil. Antonelli himself speaks of wanting to "finish on a high note" and simply enjoy the remaining races — without pressure, but with full focus.

This season Formula 1 is showing how quickly the balance of power changes: young talents do not wait their turn but seize it at once. Antonelli's victory in Mexico will be not only a personal record but also a signal that age and experience are giving way to pure speed and team synergy.

If everything goes to plan, on 30 October 2026 in Mexico City the world will see not just a new champion but the beginning of a new chapter in the history of motorsport.
