Liverpool's comeback at Anfield: how squad depth turned defeat into triumph

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

At Anfield, Liverpool were trailing 0:2 by the 29th minute, but finished the match with a 4:3 win over Villarreal. This comeback on matchday three of the 2026/27 Champions League did more than add three points — it showed how dangerous a team capable of reshaping itself on the fly can be.

The opening stages produced a picture rare for the hosts: an error by Virgil van Dijk allowed Georges Mikautadze to open the scoring in the fourth minute, and Sergi Cardona doubled the lead after a counterattack. Villarreal, under the guidance of Iñigo Pérez, played with confidence and compactness, but as soon as the opposition strayed from the plan, the initiative passed to the Reds.

Alexis Mac Allister scored the first goal with a header from Kostas Tsimikas's cross, and in first-half stoppage time Ronald Araújo equalised thanks to a pass from Rio Ngumoha. In the second half Liverpool added more: Mac Allister completed a brace, and Florian Wirtz put the finishing touch. A late goal from Tani Oluwaseyi only added nerves but did not change the outcome.

The key to victory was not only the tactical reshuffle under Andoni Iraola but also the emergence of young players. Ngumoha assisted twice and constantly created danger, while Wirtz, coming off the bench, immediately influenced the game. This is no accident: the club is betting on squad depth, where everyone can change the course of a match.

Such a comeback is a reminder that in ordinary life, too, one bad start does not determine the ending if there are resources for a restart. Liverpool, with nine points after three matchdays, maintain a perfect start, while Villarreal remain on three points — the difference lies in the ability to seize the moment.
