In the qualification round of the women's archery competition at the Asian Para Games 2026 in Nagoya, Sheetal Devi of India scored exactly 704 points out of 720 possible. This result not only matched the world record but also showed how fragile the line is between an outstanding performance and a historic achievement.

The nineteen-year-old archer from Jammu and Kashmir has already become a bronze medalist at the Paralympics in Paris and a two-time Asian Games champion. Now she has improved her own Asian record by six points and set a new Asian Games record, surpassing the mark of 680 points that she herself set in Hangzhou in 2023. The Turkish archer Öznur Gürdi remains the co-holder of the world record.

In each of the two halves of qualification, Devi scored 352 points, hitting the target 32 times in the innermost "X" zone and 25 times in the "ten." Such consistency across 72 shots speaks not only of technical mastery but also of the ability to maintain focus under the pressure of international competition. For a young athlete from a region where sport often develops in spite of circumstances, this is no longer a random surge but a steady pattern.

Para archery is a discipline where success depends on microscopic details: the position of the fingers, breathing, and even the mental image of the target. Here, as in a chess game, one wrong move can nullify all previous efforts. Devi demonstrates that regular training and experience at major tournaments allow a potential vulnerability to be turned into an advantage. Her previous Asian record of 698 points, set in Bangkok in March 2026, became merely an intermediate step.

The Indian team as a whole showed its strength: in the doubles event, Devi and Payal Nag scored 1379 points and topped the qualification. Nag scored 675 points and took joint fifth place. Such results strengthen India's position in the Paralympic program and show that systematic work with young talents is beginning to bear fruit.

Devi's achievement is a reminder that in elite sport, age is not a barrier but a resource. Her path from bronze at the 2024 Paralympics to equaling the world record in two years illustrates how determination and federation support turn individual talent into a national treasure. Ahead lie team and individual competitions, where this result can become a psychological advantage not only for her but for the entire Indian team.
