Today, two events remind us of this.

The first is the publication of the results of the new cycle of the Francis Davis Jazz Critics Poll. For two decades now, over a hundred jazz critics from various countries have been shaping a unique map of contemporary jazz, highlighting not only the most notable recordings of the year but also the ideas that are gradually changing the language of modern improvisation.

The second is the growing interest from music publications in the work of Tyshawn Sorey and his collaboration with British pianist Pat Thomas. Their joint projects are increasingly being called an exploration of the very process of music creation.

At first glance, these are just ordinary news items from the music world.

But together, they raise an unexpected question.

Why does jazz remain one of the main laboratories of musical exploration?

Improvisation as Exploration

Improvisation is much more than the freedom to play any notes. It is the ability to create form in real time.

In 2026, the paper «Evaluating Pretrained Music Embeddings for Cross-Performance Jazz Standard Recognition» was published.

Researchers posed an unusual task to modern AI models.

Can an algorithm understand that two completely different improvisations are the same jazz composition?

For the experiment, a multitude of performances of well-known standards were used.

The tempo changed. The harmony changed. The performance style changed.

Sometimes musicians strayed so far from the original melody that even a human had to listen very carefully.

The results were revealing.

Modern models more often recognized the performer's style than the composition itself.

Humans, however, hear differently. We recognize not just a sequence of sounds.

We recognize a musical idea that continues to live, even when the rhythm, harmony, and form change.

This is precisely why researchers consider jazz one of the most complex models for developing musical artificial intelligence. Because here, it is important to recognize not the recording.

But the concept, which is born anew each time.

What Have These Events Added to the World's Soundscape?

Perhaps this is why jazz remains not just a musical genre.

It reminds us that the most important discoveries are not born when we already have the answers.

They are born when we allow ourselves not to know again.

When we stop being those who think they have understood everything.

And become explorers once more.
