It seems the finale of “Fast & Furious” is set to become not just another installment of the franchise, but a true farewell to an era.
The eleventh film has been titled “Fast Forever” — Fast Forever. Its premiere is scheduled for 17 March 2028, and filming is planned to begin in December 2026 in Los Angeles — where, a quarter of a century ago, the story of Dominic Toretto began.
And Vin Diesel wants to assemble a practically impossible cast for the finale.
Robert Downey Jr. versus Dominic Toretto?
The most intriguing idea emerged several years ago.
Diesel publicly admitted that he dreams of seeing in the final “Fast & Furious” Robert Downey Jr..
And not merely in a spectacular cameo.
A character concept has been devised for him that is meant to become a true ideological opposite of Dominic Toretto.
Dom has believed his whole life in the man behind the wheel: in the engine, the road, freedom of choice, and the car as an extension of the driver himself.
But Downey’s potential character is meant to represent a completely different world — artificial intelligence, autonomous cars, and a future in which a person no longer has to keep their hands on the wheel themselves.
To Toretto, such a philosophy sounds practically like heresy.
The result is a magnificent conflict: not simply a good guy against a villain, but a clash of two visions of the automobile's future.
Man against algorithm.
Steering wheel against autopilot.
The old school against the world of artificial intelligence.
And Robert Downey Jr. really does look like an almost perfect choice for such a role.
But an important caveat: for now this is precisely Vin Diesel's dream. Downey's participation in the film has not been officially confirmed.
A finale four years in the making
It took far longer to reach “Fast Forever” than initially expected.
“Fast 10” came out back in 2023 and ended practically in the middle of the story: Dominic and his son found themselves trapped by Dante Reyes, and the fates of several characters remained unknown.
The sequel was at first intended to be released considerably earlier.
But production dragged on. Hollywood endured the writers' and actors' strikes, Universal began to take a more careful approach to the franchise's enormous budgets, and the script itself was repeatedly reworked.
According to Diesel, over the course of four years the finale was worked on by four different teams of screenwriters.
The current version was written by Michael Lesslie.
And it was precisely this script, as Diesel recounted in the summer of 2026, that finally gave him the feeling that the story was truly ready to be concluded.
He even admitted that reading the final version moved him to tears.
A return home
There is one more very beautiful detail.
The final film is planned to be shot in Los Angeles.
And that is symbolic.
When the first “Fast and Furious” came out in 2001, its world was far smaller.
No submarines, no flights into space, no saving the planet.
There were the night streets of Los Angeles, tuned-up cars, illegal races, a backyard barbecue and a group of people who gradually became a family.
Diesel has already said that he wants to bring the final part back precisely to those roots — street racing, car culture and the atmosphere of the first films.
After all the madness of the recent installments, such a turn may prove to be exactly what the franchise needs.
The family's big return
After the finale of “Fast 10,” the opportunities for comebacks left were incredibly numerous.
Returned Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne Johnson.
Unexpectedly, the one considered dead appeared — Gisele Yashar, again played by Gal Gadot.
The story of the eccentric Dante Reyes will continue — Jason Momoa clearly isn't finished with his revenge on the Toretto family.
The saga's main veterans should also return to their roles: Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang and other familiar faces.
At the same time, one most emotional question keeps coming up around the film.
Will Brian return?
Vin Diesel has long spoken of his desire to bring the story to a worthy conclusion Brian O'Conner, the character of the late Paul Walker.
But here, for now, it's important not to confuse the creators' wish with a confirmed decision.
A full-fledged digital return of Paul Walker has not been officially announced.
Nevertheless, the very possibility of Brian's appearance is being discussed, and for the final film it carries an obvious emotional meaning.
After all, it's impossible to truly close the story of Dominic Toretto without remembering the man with whom his entire on-screen family effectively began.
And even Cristiano Ronaldo may appear
And that's not the limit.
Diesel has also publicly spoken about a role written specifically for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Just how big his involvement will be, and whether it will happen at all, is not yet known.
But the direction itself is clear: the final “Fast and Furious” wants to turn into a huge event, where heroes from different eras of the franchise and utterly unexpected guests may find themselves side by side.
The last race
Over 25 years, “Fast and Furious” has come an incredible way.
The story of illegal street racers turned into one of the largest action franchises in the world.
Cars jumped between skyscrapers, planes and mountains. The heroes saved the world, rose from the dead after presumed death and even went into space.
But at the center of this utterly insane universe, one simple idea remained all along:
family.
And if the creators really do fulfill their promise to return to Los Angeles, to street racing and to Dom's relationships with the people who were by his side from the very beginning, “Fast Forever” could become a far more emotional film than many expect.
And if Robert Downey Jr. really does join the final race as a man who wants to hand control of the cars over to artificial intelligence…
then Dominic Toretto will face perhaps the most symbolic adversary in the history of the series.
The premiere of “Fast Forever” is set for 17 March 2028.
And it seems the Toretto family's final road must lead them back to where it all began.
