On April 15, 2026, a study by linguist Gašper Beguš from the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues from the international initiative Project CETI, including marine biologist Shane Gero and biologist David Gruber, was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
The scientists analyzed thousands of recordings of sperm whale vocalizations.
The main focus of the study was the famous codas—short rhythmic sequences of clicks that whales use to communicate with each other.
The results were unexpected.
The researchers discovered that these sequences possess phonological properties surprisingly similar to the organization of human speech.
