Abandoned fields retain traces of the plow for centuries: grass grows taller but loses perennials

A field abandoned decades ago looks like an ordinary meadow: green grass sways in the wind, and nature seems to have fully reclaimed the place. But look closely at the plants, and the picture becomes noticeably more complex. In such areas, tall, aggressively growing species dominate, while slow-growing perennials that characterize pristine steppes and meadows have almost disappeared.

A global study synthesizing data from 31 scientific papers across six continents revealed consistent differences between old meadows and abandoned croplands. In undisturbed meadows, perennial plants constitute the predominant part of the flora, ensuring ecosystem stability. On former croplands, the picture is different: the composition shifts toward annuals and fast-growing species, and the proportion of native perennials significantly decreases. The study found that secondary meadows support 37% fewer plant species than original undisturbed meadows, and restoring former diversity requires at least a century, often millennia.

The difference lies in fundamental growth strategies. Plants of old meadows invest resources frugally: leaves are tough with low nitrogen content, biomass accumulates slowly but resiliently—the ability to survive drought and grazing is built into their nature. On abandoned croplands, species with a completely different strategy win: thin leaves rich in nitrogen, rapid capture of light and soil. These plants may seem to occupy space more actively, but at the cost of long-term stability.

Height remains the most persistent trait of cultivation. Even on a plot abandoned three hundred years ago, grasses are noticeably taller than in a neighboring undisturbed meadow. Other traits—seed size, leaf thickness—eventually even out and lose distinction, but the height advantage persists with remarkable tenacity. This means that the memory of arable land is written into the plants' stature and erases reluctantly.

Old meadows differ not only in species composition but also in their diversity. They host tall grasses like Andropogon gerardi—a powerful perennial that dominated North American prairies—and low shrubs, creating a variegated, multi-layered landscape. On former fields, the species set is narrower, and fast-growing plants systematically displace slower competitors, simplifying and impoverishing community structure.

Meadow restoration typically relies on commercial seed mixtures. This is easy but has a side effect: mixtures consist mainly of fast-growing species, so communities created this way do not recreate the original meadow but simply repeat the same transformed variant that arises naturally during succession. Restoration thus risks perpetuating the very mistake instead of correcting it.

The authors of the studies emphasize a critical point: to restore the former appearance, one must deliberately introduce slow-growing perennials in sufficient quantities—precisely those species that do not naturally colonize disturbed lands. Without this conscious intervention, the field remains visually 'green' but ecologically already quite different. Spontaneous recovery takes centuries, sometimes millennia, and this demands it.

The question of soil carbon stocks remains open—most studies focus on the aboveground parts of plants. Deep roots and long-lived strategies of old meadow perennials likely retain and accumulate carbon differently than the shallow roots of fast grasses on former croplands. This implies that at stake is not just biodiversity but also the soil's capacity as a carbon reservoir—another reason not to neglect differences that last for centuries.

Grass on abandoned fields grows taller and faster, but it is no longer the meadow that existed before plowing. The difference persists for centuries and requires conscious, purposeful intervention in restoration. Nature here does not simply retreat—it transforms, and self-healing turns out to be much slower than one might hope.
