On an abandoned field in Norfolk, which ceased to be cultivated in 2005, a miracle of restoration occurred. Over eleven years of observation (2011–2022), a simple meadow space turned into a blooming paradise, where thousands of orchids and many rare native species now grow. The study, conducted by scientists from University College London under the leadership of Professor Carl Sayer, recorded this transformation: the number of plants in a typical plot exactly doubled — from ten species in 2011 to nearly twenty in 2022.
The main thing is no intervention. The field was not sown with expensive commercial mixtures, not plowed, not amended with soil from other places. The only thing people did was mow the grass once a year in a traditional way and remove it. Nature did the rest. Seeds from neighboring areas were carried by wind, insects, and birds; the underground seed bank preserved in the soil gradually awakened. The soil structure restored itself. On the field, named after the father of one of the researchers, southern marsh orchids, yellow rattle, rare sedges, and many other species that had disappeared from the surrounding landscape appeared.
The study, published in the journal Restoration Ecology, showed: it is traditionally believed that restoring a diverse meadow requires expensive certified seeds and constant investment. But this case breaks that logic. If the soil has preserved seeds and there are sources of pollen and seeds around, then nature simply needs space and time. Sometimes the most effective intervention is its complete absence.
Against the backdrop of the UK and European governments seeking ways to restore biodiversity on vast areas of former agricultural land, this result sounds particularly relevant. The UK has lost more than 90 percent of its flower meadows since World War II. Expensive programs of sowing complex mixtures require constant funding and are not always sustainable. Here, the example shows: patience can be cheaper than a bag of seeds.
But the conditions are critical. Restoration works only if areas with local flora — a source of new plants — remain nearby. Without this, the natural process goes much slower or does not happen at all. An undisturbed underground seed bank is also needed: if the soil was completely sterilized by intensive farming, restoration may not begin. And proper management is required — in this case, annual hay-making mowing, which prevents forest encroachment and depletes the soil, allowing weak plants to compete on equal footing with strong ones.
When the meadow matures, such a space becomes a refuge. Orchids attract pollinators, dense grass mixture protects birds and insects, complex ecosystems are created. A simple solution — leaving the field alone with minimal intervention — simultaneously solves many tasks: preserves native plants, supports food chains, improves the ecological quality of the landscape, and reduces costs.
The study reminds the world of the power of natural restoration. Nature has enormous potential if not disturbed. The main thing is to give it the right conditions: proximity to sources of species, undisturbed soil, and an honest amount of time.
