In Hubei, a rare beetle was encountered for the first time and returned to the forest-1

In the forests of Xianfeng County in the Enshi Autonomous Prefecture of Hubei Province, forest rangers came across a large beetle with a metallic sheen on its shell and unusually long front legs. It turned out to be 阳彩臂金龟 (Cheirotonus jansoni) — a species listed in China under the second protection category. Until now it was considered an inhabitant of only certain areas in the south of the country, and the find in a central province was the first confirmed one.

The beetle lives in well-preserved evergreen broad-leaved forests, where the larvae develop in rotting wood and leaf litter. Adults lead a secretive lifestyle, so encounters with them are rare even in suitable places. According to local specialists, the appearance of Cheirotonus jansoni indicates a sufficiently intact ecosystem: the forest must be old, damp and little disturbed by humans.

After examination and confirmation of the species by experts, the beetle was released back into the forest. Such actions are part of the standard practice of Chinese forestry services: the animal is not taken away for collections or breeding if it is healthy and capable of surviving in the wild. Such cases help refine distribution maps of protected species and adjust the boundaries of specially protected areas.

The discovery fits into a broader picture: in recent years, new or long-unseen insect species have been regularly recorded in Chinese forests. This happens thanks to regular patrols, cameras and cooperation with universities. Each such fact strengthens the arguments in favor of preserving old-growth forests, which serve as the last refuge for narrowly distributed endemics.

For an ordinary person, a beetle with long legs and a bright shell is simply a beautiful insect. For the ecosystem, it acts as an indicator of the health of the forest floor and of wood decomposition. When such signals appear in new places, it means that protection is working and giving a chance to species that until recently seemed to be disappearing.

Monitoring rare insects in forests helps to notice changes in ecosystems in time and protect them before the problem becomes obvious.
