Off the coast of Kerala, scientists have discovered a creature that has been hiding in plain sight under a different name for decades. The new seahorse species, described by researchers at the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, has been named Hippocampus amandavincentae in honor of Canadian marine biologist Amanda Vincent, who has dedicated her life to studying and protecting these remarkable fish.
The specimen was not found during a specialized expedition, but was instead identified among common bycatch at the Tuticorin fishing port. Shalu Kannan, the lead author of the study, noticed the unusual individual within the catch. A live specimen was later photographed at a depth of approximately 15 meters near rocky reefs off Anchuthengu. In this way, humble bycatch evolved into a major scientific event, resolving a taxonomic mystery that had persisted for a century and a half.
Previously, spiny seahorses from the Indian Ocean were classified as Hippocampus histrix, a species thought to range widely from the Red Sea to the Western Pacific. It is now clear that at least three distinct species were hidden under this single name. Following the earlier identification of Hippocampus jayakari, this latest discovery marks the fifth known seahorse species found off the coast of Kerala.
The study, published in the journal Zootaxa, illustrates just how fragile and complex the tapestry of marine biodiversity truly is. What appeared to be a single species is actually several, each with its own unique characteristics and, presumably, its own conservation needs. The discovery serves as a reminder that nature still holds surprises even in well-studied regions, and that bycatch—often dismissed as waste—can be a vital source of new knowledge.
Naming the species after Amanda Vincent is more than just a tribute. Her global efforts in seahorse conservation highlight the importance of recognizing and protecting what is easily overlooked.
