Volvo Launches Its Own Cryptocurrency: Corporations Take Money into Their Own Hands

Edited by: Yuliya Shumai

Major companies are increasingly refusing to wait for banks or governments to establish convenient payment systems. Volvo Group has tested its own cryptocurrency to simplify payments within a closed network of suppliers. Ivan Branco, head of Volvo in Belgium, explicitly stated: blockchain is evaluated not by technological trends, but by real commercial benefits.

This is not about a public token that can be bought on an exchange. It is a closed system for settlements with material suppliers and transport companies. Within such a loop, the company itself defines the rules, speed, and cost of transactions. Traditional bank transfers between countries often take days and require commissions. Here, everything happens almost instantly and with minimal costs.

Behind this lies a clear interest: control over cash flows and data. When all settlements are processed through its own ledger, Volvo can see every delivery in real time and react faster to disruptions. Suppliers, in turn, get predictable terms without intermediaries. This is not decentralization in the classical sense, but rather a digital version of old corporate settlement systems, only faster and more transparent.

Such experiments show how the very concept of money in business is changing. If previously an enterprise depended on the banking infrastructure, now it can create its own payment tool. The benefits are obvious: reduced costs, accelerated logistics, and an additional lever of influence over partners. The risks are also clear – a closed system requires trust in a single player and does not offer participants access to the external market.

For the average person, this is a signal: the future of finance will be increasingly determined not only by states and banks, but also by large corporations. Those who are testing their tokens for supply chains today may offer similar solutions to employees or customers tomorrow. The only question is how comfortably we are willing to live in a world where money is issued not only by the central bank, but also by the factory conveyor belt.
