On August 25, 2026, United Airlines announced the largest expansion of its international network in its history: starting in March 2027, the airline will launch direct flights to ten new cities in Europe and Asia, including Okinawa from San Francisco.
Among the new additions are daily flights from Newark to Luxembourg, Marseille, Ibiza, and Valencia on the new Airbus A321XLR, as well as routes to Ljubljana, Terceira in the Azores, Olbia in Sardinia, and Catania in Sicily. Washington will be connected to Toulouse, and San Francisco will get three weekly flights to Okinawa.
A key role in this plan is played by the A321XLR, a narrow-body long-range aircraft capable of transatlantic flights with the premium Polaris cabin and improved Economy Plus seats. This allows opening routes where demand does not yet justify wide-body aircraft, but where there is a steady interest in authentic travel.
Eight of the ten new cities will be exclusive to United among U.S. carriers. This approach reflects a broader trend: airlines are increasingly focusing not only on megacities but also on regions with unique culture, nature, and less tourist congestion.
Okinawa, known for its beaches, subtropical climate, and distinctive Ryukyuan culture, will get its first direct connection to the continental United States. Similarly, Sardinia and Sicily, the Azores, and Slovenia's Ljubljana will become closer for American travelers without layovers.
The expansion builds on nearly a decade of growth: since 2017, United has added 58 international destinations and now serves more than 160 cities outside the U.S. The new flights will complement existing ones, including the resumption of flights from San Francisco to Tel Aviv and additional flights to Osaka, Milan, and Paris.
In the end, United strengthens its position as a leader in the number of flights across the Atlantic and Pacific, offering passengers not just new points on the map, but the opportunity to delve deeper into local traditions and landscapes that previously required complex connections.
