While traditional beaches in Spain and Greece maintain steady demand, it is lesser-known spots—from the Albanian Riviera to Zadar, Croatia—that are showing the sharpest increase in passengers from Manchester this summer. The airport has published a list of the ten fastest-growing summer destinations, and Albania, already dubbed the "Maldives of Europe," stands out.
Following the completion of a major 2 terminal redevelopment worth 1,3 billion pounds and the commencement of work on Terminal 3, the airport is anticipating a record-breaking season. According to Commercial Director Stephen Turner, the growth is primarily driven by social media virality: "Sometimes a destination goes viral, and airlines respond by adding flights or increasing capacity."
The list includes both familiar and emerging spots: La Palma in the Canaries, Jerez de la Frontera and Valencia in Spain, Marseille, Porto, Verona, Zadar in Croatia, and Preveza in Greece. Tirana draws particular attention—not only as a city break destination but also as a gateway to the Albanian coast, where turquoise waters and white sand have been actively promoted on Instagram in recent years.
Behind the visible boom lies a clear economic logic: the airport and airlines are responding swiftly to trends so as not to miss out on growing demand. However, there is a flip side—the risk of quiet places quickly turning into overcrowded resorts, where local communities and nature come under pressure.
The Albanian Riviera, which until recently remained in the shadows, now attracts those seeking alternatives to overcrowded Greek and Spanish beaches. Social media accelerates this process: one successful shot can triple the number of passengers in a season, as noted by the airport.
Thus, the Manchester Airport list is not just a tip for vacationers, but an indicator of how the digital age is reshaping the European tourism map—opening up new horizons while simultaneously demanding a more conscious approach to travel.
