Japan is once again No. 1 in global tourism

Japan has regained first place in the Travel & Tourism Development Index 2026 of the World Economic Forum, overtaking the United States and Spain. This result was the outcome not only of a rich cultural heritage and developed infrastructure, but also of a deliberate policy to disperse tourist flows beyond the traditional centers — Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

In 2025, the country was visited by a record 42,7 million foreign guests, and their spending reached 59,7 billion dollars. At the same time, the authorities and industry organizations actively promoted regional routes, improved transport links and expanded visa opportunities. Such measures made it possible to reduce the burden on popular attractions and to draw remote prefectures into the tourism economy.

The TTDI index assesses not only readiness to receive travelers, but also the sustainability of development: the quality of air and ground transport, price competitiveness, safety, as well as the distribution of cultural and natural resources. Japan showed strong results in all these areas, especially in terms of non-commercial resources — universities, international companies and UNESCO heritage sites.

Europe as a whole retained strong positions: six countries from the top ten — Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Italy. However, it is precisely the Japanese experience of dispersing tourists that stands out against the backdrop of the global problem of overtourism. The country demonstrates how record growth in inbound flows can be combined with preserving authenticity and reducing concentration risks.

According to the report, Japan's success is largely explained by the expansion of the geography of travel and the attraction of guests from new markets. This is not just statistics — it is a real restructuring of the tourism map, where provincial temples, craft workshops and nature parks receive equal chances for travelers' attention.

The key lesson of the TTDI index 2026 is that sustainable leadership in tourism requires not only infrastructure and culture, but also a well-thought-out strategy for distributing flows.
