The agreement, known as the "Busan Agreement," was due to expire on 10 November. It has now been extended until 10 January. Bessent explained that this would give the parties additional time to work on a larger-scale deal.
The decision was made after Bessent's meetings with Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China He Lifeng. The talks took place in New York and Washington shortly before Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the United States.
US President Donald Trump personally greeted the Chinese leader at Joint Base Andrews. On the sidelines of the summit, the parties are discussing a possible reduction of tariffs on goods worth about 30 billion dollars on each side, as well as issues of financial services and agricultural procurement.
Bessent noted that China is fulfilling its commitments on soybean purchases but is lagging behind on other agricultural goods. He stressed that Washington expects fuller compliance with the agreements.
The extension of the truce makes it possible to avoid an escalation of tariffs in the coming months. The question is whether a broader agreement can be reached during this time, or whether the parties will simply extend the current terms.
