UN and UNESCO Launch Guidance for Educators of Conflict-Affected Children

On January 24, 2025, the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict (OSRSG CAAC) announced a new Guidance for Teachers and Educators in collaboration with UNESCO. This initiative aims to support the educational needs of over 100 million children denied their right to education due to conflicts, economic barriers, natural disasters, or discrimination.

In 2023, the United Nations verified 752 attacks against schools, underscoring the urgent need for protective measures. Virginia Gamba, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, emphasized the importance of safe learning environments and the role of education in promoting peace and resilience.

The new Guidance will provide educators with practical tools to create inclusive environments that assist in the reintegration of children formerly associated with armed forces and armed groups (CAAFAG). This resource addresses the existing gap in support for teachers working with these vulnerable groups.

Gamba called on the global community to prioritize educational protection, safeguard schools from military use, and integrate education into humanitarian responses. The initiative represents a significant step toward addressing the needs of conflict-affected children and promoting their recovery through education.
