UN Security Council Supports Angola's Peace Efforts in DRC

On November 15, 2024, the United Nations Security Council Committee concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) expressed its full support for Angola's efforts to alleviate the ongoing situation in the DRC. This statement was made by Michael Imran Kanu, the committee's chair, following a meeting with Angolan President João Lourenço.

The committee commended Angola for hosting the fifth ministerial meeting on October 15, 2024. Kanu emphasized the need for all parties involved to adhere strictly to the peace agreement reached on June 30, 2024.

Kanu warned that the deteriorating situation in eastern DRC could further destabilize the Great Lakes region. He urged both parties to comply with a harmonized plan aimed at achieving a lasting peace solution and reiterated support for the implementation of the Luanda and Nairobi processes.

The UN Security Council Committee concerning the DRC, established by Resolution 1533 in 2004, is tasked with monitoring compliance with sanctions related to the conflict in the DRC, evaluating expert reports, promoting dialogue among involved parties, and supporting efforts for conflict resolution to enhance security and reconstruction in the DRC.
