UN Security Council Urged for Peace in Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

On January 17, 2025, during a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine, Ambassador Samuel Žbogar emphasized the necessity of respecting fundamental principles of sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity to achieve lasting peace.

Žbogar expressed concern over the lack of signs indicating a decrease in conflict intensity, noting the involvement of North Korea and significant casualties among its soldiers. He highlighted the ongoing toll on civilians, referencing a recent Russian attack in Zaporizhzhia that resulted in over a hundred casualties.

He stated, 'Russia continues to strike Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure. Just yesterday, more than 100 missiles and drones were launched, further straining energy supplies in the midst of winter.'

Žbogar stressed that any peace must adhere to the UN Charter, asserting, 'Without respect for the fundamental principles of sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, lasting peace cannot be established. There will also be no peace without accountability for war crimes.' He reiterated Slovenia's support for Ukraine in its defense and efforts for a just peace.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo reported on the situation, stating, 'As the third anniversary of the Russian invasion approaches, global calls for de-escalation and the initiation of a process to end the conflict are becoming louder. The Secretary-General remains available to support all efforts for a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in accordance with the UN Charter.'

Due to a Russian veto, no action was taken by the Security Council on this date.
