Philippines Coast Guard Confronts Chinese 'Monster' Ship in South China Sea

On January 12, 2025, the Philippines reported that a large Chinese coast guard vessel, known as the 'Monster,' has re-entered its exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea. In response, a Philippine Coast Guard ship, BRP Teresa Magbanua, approached the Chinese vessel, which weighs 12,000 tons, and issued a radio challenge.

According to Philippine Coast Guard spokesman Jay Tarriela, the BRP Teresa Magbanua effectively hindered the Chinese ship's movements towards the coastline of Zambales province. The 'Monster' has replaced another Chinese vessel, CCG 3304, in the area.
