Astronomers have identified a new exoplanet, HD 20794 d, which may have conditions suitable for life. This discovery, made by an international team including researchers from the University of Geneva, marks a significant milestone in the quest to understand the universe.

Located approximately 19.7 light-years away in the Eridanus constellation, HD 20794 d is classified as a super-Earth, possessing a mass more than six times that of Earth. It orbits a G-type star, similar to our Sun, and resides within the star’s habitable zone, where liquid water could potentially exist.

The findings, published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, stem from over 20 years of observations utilizing advanced telescopes like HARPS and ESPRESSO. The planet's elliptical orbit causes it to oscillate between the inner and outer edges of the habitable zone, a characteristic that could facilitate the transition of water between solid and liquid states, which is essential for life as we know it.

Co-author Dr. Michael Cretinier emphasized the significance of the planet's proximity, stating that future space missions may capture images of HD 20794 d and its atmosphere. The research team utilized data from NASA's TESS satellite to confirm the planet's existence, overcoming challenges posed by background noise that initially obscured planetary signals.

This discovery could provide a valuable opportunity for scientists to model and test new hypotheses regarding the potential for life beyond Earth. The unique characteristics of HD 20794 d make it a prime candidate for next-generation observational tools, such as the ANDES spectrograph for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

As investigations into the planet's habitability continue, the newly established Center for Life in the Universe at the University of Geneva will play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of extraterrestrial environments.
