Wildfire Threatens New Jersey Area, Nov 16, 2024

Firefighters in North Jersey are on high alert as they work to contain the Jennings Creek Wildfire in West Milford, which has spread across the New York border into Sterling Forest State Park. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning, indicating critical fire weather conditions due to strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation.

The warning emphasizes that any new fires could rapidly escalate and become challenging to control. Stage 3 fire restrictions are currently in place, prohibiting open flames unless contained in an elevated stove using propane, natural gas, or electricity. Charcoal grilling is also banned.

No significant rainfall is forecasted until Thursday, November 21, when up to half an inch of precipitation is expected. Until then, sunny conditions with temperatures in the low 60s will prevail.

As of November 16, the West Milford Fire Department reported responding to 24 brush fires this month and urged residents to assist in spreading awareness. They reiterated the importance of adhering to the Red Flag Warning and burn ban, highlighting the increased risk of fire spread due to anticipated winds.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service last updated the public on November 15, stating that the Jennings Creek wildfire was 90% contained after burning 2,283 acres in New Jersey. In Orange County, New York, another 5,201 acres have burned, primarily within Sterling Forest State Park, where the fire is now 88% contained. Firefighting efforts include support from state agencies and volunteer fire companies, with aerial bucket drops from New York Air National Guard helicopters.
