Super Typhoon Julian Weakens Near Taiwan - October 1, 2024

Super Typhoon Julian is gradually weakening as it approaches the Taiwan Strait, located southwest of Taiwan and outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). Despite this, Signal No. 1 remains in effect for nine areas in Luzon, according to the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin from PAGASA.

The eye of Super Typhoon Julian was recorded approximately 270 kilometers west-northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds reaching 185 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 230 kph. The central pressure of the storm is at 925 hPa.

Julian is currently moving slowly in a north-northwest direction, with strong winds extending up to 560 kilometers from its center. PAGASA has issued a Gale Warning for the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon, indicating very rough seas in the region.

Sea conditions are particularly hazardous, with wave heights expected to reach up to 5.0 meters off the coast of Batanes and up to 4.5 meters near the Babuyan Islands and Ilocos Norte. Mariners are cautioned against venturing out to sea under these conditions, especially if they are inexperienced or lack proper equipment.

Looking ahead, Super Typhoon Julian is forecasted to recurve northeastward on Wednesday morning, potentially re-entering the PAR by the afternoon or evening. It is expected to make landfall on the southwestern coast of Taiwan either late Wednesday or early Thursday.

After crossing Taiwan's mountainous terrain, Julian is anticipated to emerge over the sea east of Taiwan on Thursday and continue moving northeast before shifting northwestward over the East China Sea. PAGASA noted that while the current forecast is subject to change, there is no significant weather system affecting Julian's motion at this time.
