A juvenile male sea lion has returned to the ocean after nearly a month of rehabilitation at the Mundo Marino Foundation's rescue center in San Clemente, Argentina.

The rescue began when a tourist, Daniela Mamousse, spotted the animal struggling on the beach with fishing line wrapped around its neck, causing a deep wound. Mamousse, a frequent visitor to the area, contacted the rescue team for assistance.

The sea lion, identified as a South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis), was admitted to the center on December 21, where it underwent a thorough clinical examination. The fishing line was removed, and the animal was stabilized with hydration and a nutritional plan.

Veterinary assessments revealed a significant injury, prompting the team to initiate systemic antibiotic treatment and pain relief. After weeks of care and monitoring, the sea lion showed positive signs of recovery, with normal blood parameters and a good appetite.

On receiving medical clearance, the veterinarians released the sea lion back into its natural habitat. Andrea Cabrera, president of the Mundo Marino Foundation, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about how human actions, like proper disposal of fishing gear, can significantly impact marine wildlife.
