NASA Astronauts Prepare for Historic Spacewalks to Upgrade International Space Station

NASA is set to conduct two significant spacewalks in January 2025 as part of ongoing upgrades to the International Space Station (ISS). The first spacewalk, designated U.S. spacewalk 91, will begin at 7 a.m. on January 16, lasting approximately six and a half hours. Live coverage will start at 5:30 a.m. on NASA+.

Astronauts Nick Hague and Suni Williams will undertake critical tasks, including replacing a rate gyro assembly essential for orientation control, installing patches on damaged light filters for the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), and replacing a reflector device on an international docking adapter.

Additionally, they will inspect access areas and connector tools for future maintenance on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. Hague will wear a suit with red stripes, while Williams will don an unmarked suit. This mission marks the fourth spacewalk for Hague and the eighth for Williams, contributing to the 273rd spacewalk for ISS assembly and maintenance.

Following U.S. spacewalk 91, NASA will announce crew members for the second spacewalk, U.S. spacewalk 92, scheduled for January 23, also starting at 7 a.m. and lasting six and a half hours. Live coverage for this event will similarly commence at 5:30 a.m. on NASA+.

A news conference discussing the upcoming spacewalks will be held on January 10 at 2 p.m. from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, featuring key personnel from NASA's operations team.
