Fiat Grande Panda: New Electric and Hybrid Models with Potential for All-Wheel Drive

The new Fiat Grande Panda, available as an electric and hybrid model, is now available for order. The design of the new model borrows styling elements from the original Panda from the 1980s. While currently front-wheel drive, Fiat is exploring the possibility of all-wheel drive models in the future.

Fiat manager Olivier François has stated that the specific technical solution for all-wheel drive is still under consideration, as is whether it will be offered in the hybrid or electric variant, or both. "Yes, we are determined to do something and are exploring it," he explained in response to questions about plans for a Panda with two driven axles. "We are trying to find the solution and a way. The question is whether it should be a combustion engine 4x4 or an electric 4x4."

A seven-seater version of the Grande Panda has been ruled out, with Fiat pointing to larger models planned, which were announced a year ago in the form of two concepts. The new model line will be based on the same Smart car platform as the Grande Panda.

A version of the Grande Panda with a pure combustion engine and manual transmission is also planned, primarily for emerging markets. François stated that he "assumes it will come to Europe at some point," but there is no rush. The focus in this region is on the electrified versions.

The current, front-wheel drive Grande Panda falls into the B-segment with a length of 3.99 meters and offers space for five people. The trunk holds 361 to 1,315 liters. The electric version of the new Grande Panda has an 83 kW (113 hp) motor. This allows the compact five-seater to reach a top speed of 132 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 11 seconds.

According to the WLTP standard, a range of 320 kilometers is possible per charge. The on-board charging module allows the lithium iron phosphate battery to be charged from 20 to 80 percent in three hours and 43 minutes. In addition, DC charging with up to 100 kW is possible, reducing the standard charging time to 33 minutes.
