BYD Launches World's Largest Eco-Friendly Car Carrier to Boost Global Exports

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has introduced its fourth roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ship, named BYD Shenzen, which boasts a capacity to transport 9,200 vehicles, making it the largest car carrier in the world.

This new vessel is equipped with environmentally friendly technologies, including box-type battery packs and belt-driven generators, enhancing its sustainability profile.

BYD aims to accelerate its export activities, having sold 4.25 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) recently, marking a 40% increase compared to the previous year. This success has seen BYD surpass major competitors like Ford, Honda, and Nissan.

The company is strategically targeting overseas markets, with plans to enhance access to regions such as Japan, South Korea, Europe, Singapore, and Thailand by 2024.

Following the launch of its first car carrier in January 2024, BYD has successfully transported vehicles to key markets, including Europe and Brazil. The recent launch of BYD Hefei also marked the transport of 5,000 NEVs on its maiden voyage.

In 2023, BYD produced 1.77 million electric vehicles, surpassing Tesla by approximately 4,500 units, solidifying its position as the largest EV manufacturer globally. However, Tesla regained its lead in 2024 with 1.78 million deliveries.

BYD's aggressive expansion strategy has prompted collaborations among major industry players, with Nissan and Honda seeking partnerships to compete against BYD's rising dominance.
