A report from Test Gorilla indicates that 88% of tech companies now prioritize specific skills over traditional qualifications like degrees.
This shift comes amid a tightening labor market, with approximately 8.1 million job openings and only 7.2 million unemployed workers available. Employers are recognizing the need to remove degree requirements to tap into a broader talent pool, particularly among underrepresented groups.
The federal government has also encouraged this trend, especially in fields like cybersecurity, where job postings without degree requirements have quadrupled from 2014 to 2023. Fourteen U.S. states have eliminated degree requirements for state jobs, highlighting a growing acceptance of skills-based hiring.
While the transition offers numerous benefits, including improved diversity and retention rates, challenges remain. Many hiring managers still favor traditional resumes, and there is a notable gap between training initiatives and actual job placements.
