Severe Winter Weather Hits Ukraine on November 23, 2024

On November 23, 2024, Ukraine will experience severe winter weather, including significant snowfall and strong winds, according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.

Forecasters predict substantial wet snow with adherence in many regions, alongside significant rainfall and icy conditions on roads. Wind gusts are expected to reach 17-25 m/s, prompting a storm warning at level I. These weather conditions may disrupt the operations of energy and utility companies and hinder transportation.

Forecaster Natalia Didenko noted that on Saturday, November 23, wet snow and rain will occur across Ukraine, with the majority of precipitation falling in the Left Bank region. By Sunday, November 24, precipitation will cease, lingering only in the eastern part of the country. Winds will be gusty, with nighttime temperatures dropping below freezing.

Cloudy weather will prevail on November 23, with wet snow expected in western, northern, Vinnitsa, and Cherkasy regions. Icy conditions are anticipated, with northwesterly winds at speeds of 7-12 m/s. Strong gusts are predicted in southern, eastern, central, and Sumy regions, reaching 17-22 m/s. In southern areas, gusts may peak at 25 m/s.

In western regions, light snow is expected, with moderate snowfall in the Carpathians overnight; temperatures will range from -3 to -8°C at night and around 0°C during the day. Northern areas (excluding Sumy), Vinnitsa, and Cherkasy regions will see significant wet snow at night, with adherence in some places, and light wet snow during the day; temperatures will fluctuate from -3°C at night to 2°C during the day. Other regions will experience moderate to significant precipitation mainly as rain, with daytime temperatures ranging from 3-8°C (8-13°C in the east and southeast). In Crimea, nighttime temperatures will be between 8-13°C, and daytime temperatures will reach 11-16°C.

According to meteoprog, Ukraine will face snowy and frosty conditions on November 23, with the warmest temperatures in Kherson region, reaching +9 to +15°C. The coldest temperatures will be recorded in Transcarpathia, where temperatures may drop to -4 to +2°C.

In Kyiv, cloudy conditions will prevail, with forecasts of wet snow and icy roads. Winds will be northwesterly at 7-12 m/s. A storm warning at level I has been issued.

Temperatures across the region will range from -3°C at night to 2°C during the day; in Kyiv, temperatures will hover around 0°C both at night and during the day.

Earlier reports indicated a drop in temperatures to -12°C with wet snow, highlighting areas in Ukraine expected to experience significant cold. The weekend weather will feature a temperature decrease and heavy precipitation in the form of wet snow and rain.

Looking ahead, winter 2024-2025 in Ukraine is projected to be relatively warm, with over half of the days expected to have more comfortable temperatures. Meteorologist Vera Balabukh predicts that January will be the warmest month of the winter.

Balabukh previously identified the coldest month of the winter season. Overall, the average seasonal temperature is anticipated to be several degrees above the norm.
