UN Recognizes Cuatro Ciénegas for Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism

In a significant recognition of global biodiversity and sustainable tourism, the United Nations has awarded Cuatro Ciénegas, Mexico, as one of the 'Best Tourism Villages' for 2024. This honor highlights the village's unique desert ecosystem and rich cultural heritage, making it a prime destination for eco-tourism.

Cuatro Ciénegas is home to an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna, including endemic species such as the Minckley’s mojarra and the soft-shelled black turtle. The area encompasses over 84,000 hectares of protected landscapes, featuring stunning natural pools and wetlands that support a diverse range of wildlife.

The recognition was announced during the 122nd Executive Council meeting of UN Tourism from November 13 to 15 in Cartagena, Colombia. Cuatro Ciénegas was one of three Mexican villages awarded, showcasing the country’s commitment to preserving its natural treasures while promoting sustainable tourism practices.

Visitors to Cuatro Ciénegas can engage in various outdoor activities, including kayaking and snorkeling, while adhering to conservation efforts.
