Chile has recently been recognized as the Principal Green Destination in South America during the 2024 World Travel Awards, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable tourism. This accolade follows its designation as the World’s Leading Green Destination in four of the last five years.

In July 2024, Chile launched the National Sustainable Tourism Strategy 2035, a collaborative effort between the National Tourism Service (Sernatur) and the Undersecretary of Tourism. The strategy aims to position tourism as a key driver for sustainable development across the country, enhancing the well-being of communities while conserving the environment.

“Our vision for 2035 is for Chile to be recognized for its sustainable tourism, which contributes to community welfare and economic growth,” stated Cristóbal Benítez, director of Sernatur. The strategy emphasizes cultural awareness, proactive climate action, and the preservation of biodiversity within protected areas.

Chile is home to 46 national parks, offering activities such as trekking, kayaking, and wildlife observation. Among these, the Lauca National Park stands out with over 130 bird species, while Rapa Nui National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases the unique Rapanui culture and stunning landscapes.

This commitment to sustainable tourism is further reinforced by a certification system that includes the Sello R (Registered Tourist Service), Sello Q (Tourism Quality Seal), and Sello S (Sustainable Tourism). These certifications ensure that tourism businesses adhere to sustainability criteria across economic, sociocultural, and environmental dimensions.

As the world faces increasing environmental challenges, Chile's proactive approach to sustainable tourism and biodiversity conservation serves as an inspiring model for other nations to follow.
