Barnet Schools Ban Smartphones to Combat Mental Health Risks

Starting September, 103 primary schools in Barnet will prohibit smartphones, with 23 secondary schools aiming for complete smartphone removal by 2025. This initiative, supported by Smartphone Free Childhood (SFC), school leaders, Barnet Public Health, and MP Dan Tomlinson, impacts over 63,000 students. New Year 7 students will be smartphone-free up to Year 11. SFC cites a correlation between smartphone/social media use and increased depression, anxiety, and self-harm in young children.
