Mitsubishi Fuso Negotiates Solar Vehicle Production in Portugal Amid Record Growth

On October 9, 2024, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck Europe (MFTE) announced negotiations to potentially produce the EVIG, a solar-powered vehicle developed by the Swedish company Clean Motion, at its facility in Tramagal, Portugal. This initiative follows a letter of intent signed on September 23, 2024, indicating both companies' interest in exploring collaboration for local production and assembly of the EVIG.

The EVIG is designed with a maximum speed of 60 km/h and an operational range of 100 to 200 kilometers, capable of carrying up to 350 kilograms. With a price tag of €15,600, the vehicle aims to address growing demand for sustainable transport solutions. Clean Motion's CEO, Ulf Rask, emphasized that this partnership could significantly enhance production capabilities, especially in light of the current limitation of 600 units per year at their Swedish facility.

Should the feasibility assessment in Tramagal prove successful, MFTE and Clean Motion may proceed with full-scale assembly or production, aligning with market interests in Portugal, Spain, and neighboring countries. The MFTE plant recently celebrated its best production year in 2023, manufacturing over 12,000 units and generating a revenue of €334 million, reinforcing its status as a key player in the European automotive industry.

This collaboration underscores a significant shift towards sustainable vehicle production in Europe, reflecting broader global trends in environmental responsibility and innovation in the automotive sector.
