Ongoing Protests in Serbia Amid Political Turmoil as Students Demand Accountability

On February 1, 2025, hundreds of students from Belgrade are set to block bridges in Novi Sad, three months after a tragic incident that claimed lives. The protests are driven by demands for accountability and transparency from the Serbian government, particularly in the wake of violent clashes involving members of the ruling party.

Vojin Jovanović, a civil engineering student, stated that their actions signify that their demands remain unmet. The protests come as President Aleksandar Vučić attempts to project an image of normalcy while facing mounting public discontent.

The political landscape remains uncertain, with Vučić facing three potential paths: appointing a loyal successor, establishing a technocratic government, or calling for elections, which the opposition is likely to boycott. The protests have intensified following reports of police brutality against students, leading to the resignations of key officials.

Investigative reports have surfaced, revealing allegations of corruption and mismanagement related to the distribution of Novi Sad among various factions. Amidst this turmoil, students are focusing on four primary demands: the release of documentation regarding infrastructure projects, accountability for violence against protesters, cessation of legal actions against demonstrators, and increased funding for universities.

Political analysts suggest that if students deem their demands met, they may cease protests, potentially allowing Vučić to navigate the political crisis without further unrest. However, concerns remain about the fairness of any future elections and the possibility of genuine political reform.

European Union representatives have expressed support for the protesters, emphasizing the constitutional right to dissent. As tensions continue, Vučić's efforts to engage with local communities appear overshadowed by the ongoing crisis in Novi Sad.
