Belgium Battles Largest Wildfire in History as It Nears German Border

Eastern Belgium's High Fens nature reserve has been ravaged by the country's largest-ever wildfire since Friday. The blaze has already consumed 3,000 hectares, and local authorities report that the fire front is advancing towards the German border.

Firefighters from Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg, along with military personnel and farmers, are striving to contain the inferno. Dutch helicopters have arrived to assist, and the European Union dispatched three helicopters and two amphibious aircraft following Belgium's request.

Residents from evacuated villages are currently unable to return; while the defensive line holds, the situation remains critical. In the German town of Monschau, residents in border areas have been advised to leave their homes due to heavy smoke, although direct fire spread into German territory is not anticipated.

This current fire is more than double the size of the previous major blaze in 2011, which burned approximately 1,400 hectares. “We could never have imagined that Belgium would face a fire of this magnitude. Now we have to face the facts,” noted Fire Brigade Captain Karim Bouarfa.

Across Europe, a series of heatwaves has led to severe drought and dry vegetation, which facilitates the rapid spread of fires. Scientists attribute such conditions to anthropogenic climate change.

Bouarfa added that similar fires are likely to occur more frequently, emphasizing the need for countries to be better prepared. How will this impact the future of the region?

Meanwhile, other parts of Europe are also battling major fires: two people have died on the Greek island of Salamina, and in Spain’s Aragon region, fire has already destroyed 16,600 hectares.

This is a very BIG deal, so let me break it down. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN body regulating maritime transport, will vote this Friday to finalize their “net zero framework” for shipping across the board. 🚢 Beginning in 2028, all ships will need to

No taxation without representation. Being taxed by the UN would be far more offensive than the taxes imposed by Great Britain against the American colonies more than 250 years ago. Those taxes sparked the American Revolution. The UN should be defunded, not seeded with new
