The US has imposed a ban on imports of Canadian goods worth almost $1 billion

Washington has imposed a ban on imports of Canadian goods worth almost $1 billion. The measure took effect early on Tuesday morning, 29 September 2026.

The restrictions cover alcoholic beverages, certain dairy products and motorcycles. According to experts' estimates, the total value of the affected goods is about $967 million, according to 2025 data.

87% of that sum comes from alcohol: beer, wine, whiskey, rum, vodka and other spirits. The reason is retaliatory action by Canadian provinces, which had earlier removed American alcohol from the shelves of state-run stores.

Certain dairy products, including whey, are also banned, as are motorcycles, including the three-wheeled Can-Am models from the company Bombardier Recreational Products.

The decision was a direct response to Canadian retaliatory tariffs on American goods worth $20 billion, which took effect the day before. Canada introduced them after the US had earlier imposed 50 percent duties on Canadian products.

The trade dispute between the countries has been dragging on for a long time. The main disagreements concern the protection of the Canadian dairy market and access for American goods to the Canadian alcohol market.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the country is ready for a shift in trade policy, although it will come at a cost. American officials emphasize that the measure is aimed at leveling the playing field.

Experts note that the ban affects only about 0,25% of Canadian exports to the US, but it clearly exacerbates already tense relations. How far will this spiral of the trade war go?

The company BRP from Quebec confirmed that its motorcycles will not be able to be imported into the US, but a serious impact on the business is not expected before next year because of shipments already completed.
