The bills focus on cybersecurity, accelerating research, and preparing the workforce for changes in the economy.
Among the key measures is the codification of the Center for AI Safety and Innovation at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
The center was previously called the U.S. AI Safety Institute. Now its powers are enshrined in law.
The AI Security and Innovation Act (H.R. 9363) passed the committee with a result of 29–0.
It aims to assess the risks of frontier AI systems, share information, and promote international cooperation on standards.
Another important document, the CREATE AI Act, concerns a research resource at the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The package also includes measures on labeling generative AI, the energy efficiency of data centers, and protecting consumers from deceptive AI.
Votes on most of the bills passed by a wide margin, underscoring the bipartisan nature of the initiatives.
